RadiologyOur expert Consultant Radiologist provides advanced imaging investigations to support the care we provide you with. In addition, your GP could refer you directly to any of our radiology services, which include: Abdominal ultrasound scanThe scan will look at structures such as the liver, gall bladder, kidneys, etc. It is useful in the investigation of abdominal pain or swelling in the abdomen. Pelvis ultrasounds scanThis is really 2 scans, as the pelvis is examined by an abdominal scan and a trans-vaginal scan. It is very useful in cases of infertility and gynaecological problems. Doppler leg veins blood flow studiesThis is used to detect clots in the veins of the legs (sometimes called DVT: deep venous thrombosis). Pregnancy dating ultrasound scanThis is done to establish accurately how far you are in pregnancy as this knowledge is very useful in making decisions later on in pregnancy. In fact, it is a national recommendation in the UK that every pregnant woman has a dating scan early in pregnancy. Pregnancy viability/reassurance ultrasound scanThis is done to establish that the pregnancy is going well. It is useful in cases where there is anxiety because of abdominal pain, bleeding or history of previous problems such as ectopic pregnancy. Uterine artery DopplerThis is an advance ultrasound technique used to measure the blood flow in the vessel supplying the womb during pregnancy. It is done around 18-20 weeks pregnancy and is useful in predicting the chance of developing certain serious pregnancy complications such as pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure) or small growth of the fetus. Advanced obstetric scanThis done at about 20 weeks pregnancy, when our experienced Consultant Radiologist carefully examines the major organs of the fetus with ultrasound scan to exclude structural anomalies. This is an important scan to reassure the couple, and it is a national recommendation in the UK that every pregnant woman has a fetal anomaly scan. Scan to determine the sex of the babyThis could be done at the time of the advanced obstetric scan if requested. Cervical length scanThis ultrasound scan is done after 12 weeks pregnancy to measure the length of the cervix (neck of the womb). It may be recommended by your Consultant Obstetrician if you have had previous preterm deliveries or early (before 12 weeks) miscarriage. The scan will help your Consultant assess the chance of this happening again and what could be done to reduce it. |
