Screening for abnormalities in the baby

Screening for abnormalities in the baby

This starts before you are pregnant. A detailed history is taken and you will be advised of any specific (to you) risks. Women who have a pre-existing medical condition, such as diabetes or epilepsy should seek medical advice before conceiving.

For most people, a screening blood test at around 16 weeks (that measure certain substances produced by the baby) and an advanced obstetric scan performed at about 20 weeks gestation are carried out. All the findings and their limitations will be fully discussed with you by our Consultants and you will also receive a detailed written report.
