Management of early pregnancy problemsMiscarriageWhen things go wrong you want expert care, delivered sensitively, promptly and professionally. We offer reassurance a scan to check the viability of the pregnancy and also make sure that the pregnancy is in the womb. Should you be unfortunate enough to suffer a miscarriage, we can carry out procedures such as an evacuation of retained products of conception (day-case operation to empty the womb), should it be necessary. We also discuss with you other alternatives such as expectant management (waiting for the miscarriage to happen on its own) or medical management (emptying the uterus by taking tablets without the need for an operation). Ectopic PregnancyEctopic pregnancy is a pregnancy, which implants occurs outside of the womb, usually in the tube. The chance of it happening is about 1 in 200. If it has happened once, there is a 1 in 5 chance of it happening again. An ectopic pregnancy can be life threatening if it is left untreated. It can present with abdominal pain, feeling faint, and occasionally shoulder-tip pain and some women have just vaginal bleeding with no pain. It is strongly suggested by having a positive pregnancy test and finding nothing in the womb on transvaginal ultrasound scan. It is definitively diagnosed by performing a laparoscopy. As well as making the diagnosis, it is usually possible to remove the tube (or sometimes just the ectopic pregnancy) at the laparoscopy. We also offer medical treatment for ectopic pregnancy, which (in suitable cases) is given in the form of injections, thus avoiding an operations. If you have suffered an ectopic pregnancy once, it is important that in any subsequent pregnancies you have an early reassurance scan to check where the pregnancy is, even if you have no symptoms. |
