Counselling after previous difficult pregnancy

Counselling after previous difficult pregnancy

Most women who have had a difficult experience with childbirth previously (be it caesarean section, instrumental delivery or certain complications) are understandably very anxious about their future pregnancy and delivery. Our experienced consultant obstetricians will go through the details of your previous experience, write to your previous hospital/doctor to obtain the necessary details, and advise you in detail about your options during your current or upcoming pregnancy.

Pregnant women with history of pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure in pregnancy) or a small baby in a previous pregnancy could be offered a special scan test called uterine artery Doppler to measure the blood flow in the vessel supplying the womb. After the test your consultant will discuss with you the chance of developing these problems in the current pregnancy and what could be done to reduce it.

Women who have had previous late (after 12 weeks) miscarriages may have weakness in the neck of the womb (cervix), and a scan could be done in the current pregnancy to measure the length of the neck of the womb (cervical length scan) and assess the chance of this happening again and what could be done to reduce it.
