Andrology

Overview

Andrology is the branch of medicine that looks after the man’s sexual and reproductive function, and we have the only Andrology clinic in Birmingham. This is run jointly by a leading consultant urologist/ andrologist and a consultant fertility specialist.

Areas that we deal with are male infertility, male sexual problems, testicular lumps, varicocele, vasectomy and vasectomy reversal.

Types of Problems:

Male Infertility

Male sexual problems

Typical problems include impotence and erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, deformity of the penis and psychosexual problems. These are sensitive, confidential and important issues. They could be due to a range of causes such as stress, psychosexual issues and physical problems. Our experienced consultant will make a full assessment to find the cause and offer appropriate treatment and support.

Testicular mass and varicocele (engorgement of the blood vessels in the testis)

We run a specialised testicular clinic where all these types of problems are fully assessed (e.g. testicular ultrasound scan) and treatment options discussed and offered (such as laparoscopic (key-hole) treatment of varicocele).

Permanent male contraception

Vasectomy (surgical blocking of the tube – known as the vas - that takes the sperm to the outside) is a simple procedure done under local anaesthetic, and is highly effective. All the options, including the chance to freeze sperm before the procedure, will be discussed with you by our consultant. Moreover, because we offer both male and female sterilisation in our clinic, you as a couple have the chance to choose the best option for you.

Reversal of vasectomy

This is done when a man wants to father a child after having had a vasectomy. The blockage is excised and the tube (vas) is rejoined. It is one of the options that will be discussed with you. Other options include surgical sperm retrieval and ICSI (a test-tube baby technique where a single sperm is injected into the egg to form an embryo).

Well-man clinic

We can offer general health checks, testing for testicular or prostate cancer and andropause care (like menopause in women).
